Frightening Thoughts

The problem is that we spend all the time fighting fires, but we lack a plan of action for three, or five years ahead,” Ingrīda Blūma, the former president of Hansabanka in a Diena interview on May 12, 2008.

News Roundup: Moonshine is just a way of life

Posted in Uncategorized on December 17th, 2006

* The Land That Drinks: We not only make the news with cheap prostitutes (come one, come all, still they’re the cheapest in Europe), but also with cheap home-made alcohol with a tiny side effect of death. For eight Latvian people, a sip of bootleg alcohol from the neighboring Mother Russia became fatal. Disinfectant and furniture polish — ingredients of the concoction — contributed to the deaths, or something. Oh, and those Russians in Western Russia died too. For the future reference, the best homemade booze is sold in Eastern Latvia. And FYI: I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy in Riga that can help you get drunk cheap. Reuters, V-Diena

* Sentence Solution: Latvian PM, or whatever his title is until the Prez names the new PM, which could also be the same old PM, Aigars Kalvitis thinks those selling bootleg booze should spend some time behind bars. That’s how we deal with alcohol problems: we lock them up behind bars on a dirty floor, with a toilet in a corner and keep our fingers crossed they’ll learn their lesson, rather than help them out with some kind of recovery effort. TV Net, Delfi.

* Suprise Government: Yeah, right. Today is the day when the Prez Vaira “Canadian Grandmother” Vike Frieberga will announce whom she would entrust to lead the mighty Latvian government following last month’s election. Could PM Aigars “The Chipmunk” Kalvitis keep his job? Could his cheeks get any bigger? Who cares! V-Diena

* Halloween Welcome: In some countries, criminals wear masks to rob banks. In Latvia, they wear black masks to attack tourists. A group of men Sunday night attacked British tourists on the Dome Square in downtown Riga. “It looks like someone wanted to show them a warm welcome to Riga,” said one witness. Diena
