Frightening Thoughts

The problem is that we spend all the time fighting fires, but we lack a plan of action for three, or five years ahead,” Ingrīda Blūma, the former president of Hansabanka in a Diena interview on May 12, 2008.

After the Saeima validated its existence by adopting a constitutional amendment recognizing a marriage between a man and a woman, the proposal goes to Latvia’s President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga. Latvia’s First Party drafted the proposal to amend the constitution following the summer Rigas Praids parade last summer.

The President declined to indicate whether she will sign the amendment, Diena reported today. “She is the only one who can stop amending the Constitution with laws that shouldn’t be in it,” the newspaper writes.

Update: According to apollo.lv, the President will opine on the matter after her meeting with Latvia’s Prime Minister, Mr. Kalvitis, at noon Wednesday. Also, an online petition began circulating to prevent homophobia in Latvian politics. via musicalcat

We call on all people who have healthy and democratic beliefs to write to Latvian President Vaira Vike Freiberga and to call on her to reject this homophobic constitutional amendment.

According to the family law, marriage between people of the same gender is already forbidden and is not recognized by the state.
