RIGA – According to a Latvijas Fakti survey published over the weekend, every fifth Latvian longs for the president to suspend the Constitution and rule the country with a strong hand, similar to the way Charles Ulmanis did back in 1934.

Which means that 4/5 are not in favour. Un viss. 80%!

You’re right it is a matter of perspective, but you don’t find the number just a little bit too large?

Vaira Vike-Freiberga was recently quoted in saying that people are expecting her to be “a lucky teddy bear” that will come and rescue the fallen Latvian nation. And she didn’t want to be that bear. I think the percentage of people who say the dictatorship is a way to go and who could be swayed into thinking that a dictatorship is a way to go is rather significant in a country where people never seem to agree on anything.

Although I would probably never say it aloud I wouldnt mind someone to come along and give the current pollies a whack with a big stick. The shoolyard politicking the current group of leaders insist on playing means the hole only gets deeper

Its probably not the concept of a traditional dictator that people are longing for, just someone who will take charge…..I for one would love someone to take charge of the current situation and get things done….perhaps if it takes a dictator to do that then it might be a viable option!
