Key Dates to Watch in the Presidential Election

May 3 – Collection of signatures concerning a possible referendum on two national-security laws closes.

May 10 – The deadline for the Central Election Board to announce the result of the signature drive. Some say the result will be a vote of confidence to the current government and the parliament. Depending on the result, the President may decide to dissolve the current parliament and call early elections.

May 12 – Latvijas Pirma Partija/Latvijas Cels are expected to announce their candidate for the post.

June 6 – The Parliament is expected to vote for the next President.

July 7 – President Vaira Vike-Freiberga’s term expires.
